A record 14.5 million people selected or were automatically re-enrolled in a health plan through the federally facilitated or state-based marketplaces during 2022 open enrollment, including about 3 million new consumers, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced today. Open enrollment ended Jan. 15 for the federally facilitated marketplace and many state-based marketplaces, but remains open through Jan. 31 in California, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Washington, D.C.

According to a report released today by the Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. uninsured rate fell from 10.3% in fourth-quarter 2020 to 8.9% in third-quarter 2021, with the largest decline among people earning less than 200% of the federal poverty level.

CMS also announced $49.4 million in grants to connect more eligible children, parents, and pregnant individuals to health care coverage year-round through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and encouraged organizations that serve uninsured children, families and pregnant individuals in diverse and underserved communities to apply through March 28.
